## The Hans Schneider Prize

The Hans Schneider Prize in Linear Algebra ("the Prize") is awarded by The International Linear Algebra Society ("ILAS") for research, contributions, and achievements at the highest level of Linear Algebra. The Prize may be awarded for an outstanding scientific achievement or for lifetime contribution.

## The Taussky-Todd Lecture

Olga Taussky and John Todd have had a decisive impact on the development of theoretical and numerical linear algebra for over half a century. This lecture honors them for their many and varied mathematical achievements and for their efforts in promoting linear algebra and matrix theory.

The lecture is to be given once every three to four years at an ILAS meeting designated by the ILAS executive committee. The lecturer should be a person who has received a Ph. D. degree within about fifteen years of the chosen ILAS meeting.

The president shall appoint a committee consisting of at least four ILAS members to select a lecturer.

The lecturer chosen should be a person who at an early stage in his or her career already has made significant contributions to linear algebra and matrix theory.

The lecture should normally cover a broad area of current research in linear algebra or matrix theory and be of a survey or historical nature.

## LAA Lecture series at ILAS conferences

There are many areas of pure and applied mathematics which have close connections to linear algebra. These may heavily use results from linear algebra. In turn, problems raised by such fields have led to important new developments in linear algebra. Examples of such fields are : probability and the theory of Markov chains, statistics, the theory of mixed volumes, approximation theory, operator theory or operator algebras, the theory of algebras, systems and control, and so forth.

The LAA lecturer will present some part of an area of close connection to linear algebra in a talk that focuses on the impact of linear algebra on that area. Or he/she might present an area of linear algebra where problems and their solutions were motivated by an area of close connection.

The lecture is to be given once every two or three years at an ILAS meeting designated by the ILAS executive committee.

For each lecture, the ILAS president shall appoint a committee consisting of at least three ILAS members to select a lecturer.

## ILAS Lectureship at non-ILAS conferences

The ILAS Board reviews proposals and decides on which, if any, will receive support, and how much that support will be.

Electronic requests are preferred and should be sent to the president of ILAS.

## Hans Schneider ILAS Lecture

The Hans Schneider ILAS Lecture Fund was established with a generous donation from ILAS's founding President, Hans Schneider. Additional contributions to the Fund are welcome.

The Fund supports one speaker per year to give a lecture on linear algebra (and possibly its applications to or connections with a related discipline) at a non-ILAS meeting. The Hans Schneider ILAS Lecture is one of ILAS's signature programmes. Consequently, the Hans Schneider ILAS Lecture will be given by a researcher with strong expository skills whose work represents linear algebra at its highest level.

Each year, the ILAS Board of Directors will evaluate proposals for ILAS Lectures at non-ILAS meetings. The top ranked proposal will be identified as the Hans Schneider ILAS Lecture. In any given year, the Board may determine that no speaker be designated as the Hans Schneider ILAS Lecturer.

## Israel Gohberg ILAS-IWOTA Lecture

The Israel Gohberg ILAS-IWOTA Lecture honors the legacy of Israel Gohberg, whose research crossed borders between operator theory, linear algebra, and related fields. This lecture is in collaboration with the International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA), an institution that was founded by Gohberg. This series of lectures will be delivered at IWOTA and ILAS Conferences, in different years, in the approximate ratio two-thirds at IWOTA and one-third at ILAS.
